Driving Out Hate

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

  2. Love can do that. And how does this work? Mustn´t we begin to understand the reason for hate at first? A contribution from Shakespeare:

“In time we hate that which we often fear.”

Forgive me, but what Shakespeare states can mean everything and nothing, without being even sibylline. And in concrete it is quite often even wrong, since fear can make us love what we fear! Immediately or in time. And I do not mean in the sense of MLKjr - which is meant as an intentional aimed antidote - but spontaniously::: think of the Stockholm Syndrom, think of the Neo-Nazis in Israel and the Czech Republic. I guess this was happening also in shakespeare's time.

More than this my personal experience and observation is, that one can hate in time a person, one has loved very much a long time before, if one has been rejected very often by that person and then one day it becomes evident that the reason wasn't incomprehension but dissimulated aversion and obliqueness boosted by a willingly obtuse arrogance. Then the fear can appear: the fear to become a killer out of hatred.

When citing Shakespeare I remembered the quote of january 31st ("Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.")
