The Usual

"I think I was forty before I realized that every writer who has ever published a line has been accused by someone of wasting his God given talent. If you write or dance or paint or sing, I suppose, someone will try to make you feel lousy about it, that’s all.”
Steven King

  1. To me this statement seems an irritated selfish exaggeration of a successful writer. What does he want? A comfortable saddle on Shakespeare's back? A prestigious literature price? A magic formula which prooves beyond any possible doubt that success is ALWAYS due to quality?

It is obvious that only successful writers are criticized, and it is comprehensible that the audience tries to establish a ranking.

If Steven King doesn't like this, he should become a dentist.

Kathleen Rowling doesn't have so much heartburn.

  2. At the age of forty, it´s rather late when you hear the first time such a critic about your wasted talent. You must not be a writer or painter, every child gets this message sometimes or often, either sitting in front of a TV or playing idiotic games and so and so. Wasted time, wasted talent, wasted money, wasted opportunities, wasted effort. As far as I remember even God, when he was young, received critics like this.
